Description
A survey of Japanese cinema from its prehistory to the present, interrogating the relationship between cinema and Japanese society through familiar concepts such as auteur, genre, national characteristics and ethnicity, gender and racial hierarchy, culture, Tradition vs. Modernity, the East and the West. We will focus on both historical specificities of "Japan" and formal aspect of filmic texts. Defining cinema as a social practice, our discussion will cover ideological negotiations involved in film exhibition and identity formation.
